I had a discussion today with a friend about a fear they had that they would not be supported in the beginning stages of an opportunity they really wanted to take advantage of. I can honestly say my response just kind of came to me and has become the inspiration for this blog post.
I told my friend that they have to trust their gut. If they had a feeling that this opportunity was bigger than them, they should go all in. I say this because our gut is like our body's second brain. When you have a feeling in your gut, it is a sense of your immediate intuition. Trusting your gut is probably the biggest way you can trust yourself.
But what if you are scared that your gut is wrong? Think about it this way. Trusting your gut can be terrifying. Most of the time, it is not the easy choice to follow it. But the reward could be so satisfactory and worth it. What if using your gut was God's way of pointing you in the right direction of His plan for you? That's well beyond the temporary pleasure of making the easy choice.
The best example I can think of is Peter. Jesus' disciples saw Jesus walking on water. Unlike the other disciples, Peter stepped out in faith to walk on the water. And he did.
I have a hard time believing that every single disciple fully believed that Peter was going to be able to walk on the water. This is still something that occurs today. Each of us are going to have people who do not support every one of our decisions. And that is OK.
But what did Jesus tell Peter to do? He simply told him to come. And by stepping out in faith and trusting this feeling that he can indeed walk on the water (which is completely unheard of, by the way), Peter walked on water. I don't know about you, but I don't know of anyone else who has been able to do that.
"But Ansley, what if I fail? What if I fall short? What if I drown?"
But what if you succeed? What if you soar? What if you walk on water? The beautiful thing about all of this is that if we do begin to fail, we have someone to pick us back up and brush us off. His support is all that matters. His love is all that we need. We just have to have the faith to trust that He will be there for us and to save us.
Because Peter began to doubt as he was walking on water, he began to drown. Even though he failed, Jesus still reached out his hand to pull Peter up and returned him to the safety of the boat.
The moral of the story is trusting your gut despite what others may say or think is worth the risk. The risk is ALWAYS worth taking the chance. Trust your gut. Trust in God.
So what if we all defied the odds and stepped out in faith? Would you rather trust your gut or satisfy those putting doubt in your mind? Can you imagine the legacy we could leave on this Earth by taking the risk instead of playing it safe?
Take the risk. Be bold. Jump all in. Be willing to let it rock your world. Life is too short to play it safe and satisfy everyone.
I'm interested to know when trusting your gut was the right decision and how it changed your life. Feel free to reach out or let me know in the comments!
